We Are almost To Our Winter Home

Yup . Tonight we are in South Carolina. It's been a long day.

Unfortunately Ruth has figured out how to set the alarm on my iPhone.

It went off at 6:30 this morning. She didn't move so I had to get up and turn it off.

I had to climb out of bed , walk down the hall past the bathroom , 

past the kitchen and into the living room before I got to the phone.

We need a smaller coach. Anyways , she set it this early so we could be at a farmers market 

by 8:00 A.M. and be in line for some fresh tomatoes. 

Sigh. If she's happy , so am I.

It was a crappy and small market .

The best thing there was this halloween dog.

So we hit the road and made Charleston , South Carolina by 5:00.

Saw another farmers market on the way to the nicest KLO yet . 

This market was also a disappointment.

Got the the RV park and as soon as we were set up we took Daisy for a walk.

We both get stiff with just sitting in the coach all day.

The park people were all ready for a bunch of trick or treat kids tonight.

Ghosts everywhere.

Ruth and I argued about whether this was a girl or boy ghost.

I won.

This KLO is on a gorgeous  lake.

The walk was very scenic.

I thought this was a cool little cabin they rent out . 

What a great idea.

Now we know we are almost home when we start seeing signs like this.

Today We Toured Historic Jamestown

We started out seeing the replica of the village that Pocahontas was likely born in.

These North American Indians were smart. They were clean , industrious and caring.

They had been here for about 10,000 years before the english came and they fed and protected them 

for the first few years that the english were here.

History doesn't lie.

 This country could have ended up quite different quite easily.

The huts they lived in were well built.

This one had benches along the sides and was a lodge for meetings.

This village was a replica that has been unearthed a few miles down the John's River.

They were cooking a chicken here along with some soup.

We were told that chicken didn't exist in North America until the English brought them. 

Traditionally it would have been something like a pheasant or quail.

This is the beginning of a canoe being constructed.

They would char a large hemlock and then scrape out the burnt area to form the boat.

We walked down to the water where there were the 3 replica ships docked . 

These were exact copies of the ships they sailed on from England in 1607 to Jamestown.

We had a nice talk with the gal on board. 

She was in costume and played the roll of coming over on this boat.

Not a nice time.

I can't imagine being on board something this small for 5 months with 163 people.

Next we wandered into the fort.

It is an exact replica of the original fort which is an archaeology dig 3 miles away.

We toured that location yesterday and it was great.

 I'm glad we went there first. It gave this place more meaning. 

This place is interesting but not the real McKoy.

The buildings are interesting on how they were used.

The guns were not reliable in those days.

This fellow was full of stories about weapons and the life as a blacksmith.

The english had armour which protected them from the indians arrows.

I took 2 panoramic pictures from inside the fort. Very basic living.

After all this walking Ruth found this terrific place called the Triangle .

Well worth the visit. I would come back.

Best Mac and Cheese ever.

 We finished the day of on a 2 mile nature hike thru the bush. We'll sleep good tonight.

Finished just at dusk. It was a very nice day.

Thursday. A Wonderful Walking Day In Virginia . 9.7 Kilometres according to my iPhone.

So we ended up in Williamsburg last night in a very nice campground.

This morning we headed out to see the original town of Colonial Williamsburg.

The town has been restored to original grander and was well worth the visit.

The buildings are all restored . This is how it was in the 18th century.

Williamsburg was made up of the 2% wealthy. 

This is the Governor's Palace.

Everyone working here was dressed and acting in the era.

This woman was sitting there playing the violin and she was very good.

The neighbourhoods were full of characters doing their daily chores.

The garden in one yard had an early style green house.

Ruth thought I could make her one like this if we ever have a home again.

Hard to loose her in a crowd with her new leggings.

One woman in character stopped Ruth to say " Madam , I love your britches."

Finally , A drinking partner who can keep up.

Ruth told a funny joke.

Remember the wheel barrow races we did as kids.

They have the whole town decked out for halloween.

The houses were much larger than I would have expected for this day and age but Williamsburg was made up of the wealthy and they all had slaves to take care of them.

Next stop was the original site of Jamestown.

This is where America started.

We had spent about 3.5 hours walking around the old fort and museum . 

As we were leaving we hooked up with a tour which was very interesting.

The tour guide was very knowledgable and very funny.

John Smith was an explorer from england who mad this all happen.

Very interesting. 

Ruth took a brief nap in the sun while I went on with the tour.

We heard the real story about Pocahontas. 

This sculpture was erected in 1922 but this isn't how the east coast indians looked. 

These clothes are more to Geronamo's tribe on the plain's

.

Pocahontas looked more like this.

This is the church she was married in at about the age 19.

She married a englishman after she had been kidnapped and held hostage in James Fort.

Tomorrow we are spending the morning at the Jamestown Settlement where they have everyone on site  looking and acting like we just stepped back into the early 1600's.

I can't wait.

Wednesday. A Day In The Rain

We made Altoona , Pennsylvania  last night. 

Nice Campground. The owner obviously loves trains.

It wasn't a very nice day today.

I woke up just as the sun came up and took Daisy for her morning amble in the rain.

After I put her back in the coach I started to pack up the electrical cord out back 

when I heard a noise about 10 feet away. It made me jump. 

So here is a nice juicy turkey running around my camp site thinking it's safe 

because of the Canadian licence plate and our Thanksgiving is over . 

BUT , 

It didn't know we are spending American Thanksgiving with the Tawn Girls 

and their husbands in a few weeks. Big Meat Eaters.

I chased that bird all over the campground with my hatchet but it got away.

I almost became A Thanksgiving Hero. Rats.

Pennsylvania and Virginia are beautiful states.

It rained like a SOB all day. Not fun driving.

We had planned on seeing the sites by foot while in Washington but it was too wet.

It ended up being a drive by day.

The architecture here is breathtaking.

We decided to book a few days here next year on our way to Florida.

We'll be coming in September instead of the end of October next time. 

So Ruth found this great campground in Williamsburg 

and whipped together a tasty dinner.

Tomorrow we will do some tourist things before leaving .
